Hey, Middle Schoolers! π
Our classroom is a place to learn, explore, ask questions, and have fun. But there’s something even more important than learning: making sure everyone stays safe.
Throughout the school year, we practice different emergency procedures, including fire drills and lockdown drills.
These drills help us prepare for situations we hope never happen. Knowing what to do and following instructions can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe.
π₯ Fire Drills: Practice Makes Prepared!
Fire drills help us practice responding safely if we ever need to leave a building because of a fire or another emergency.
During a fire drill, remember to:
- Stop what you’re doing and listen carefully.
- Follow your teacher’s instructions immediately.
- Stay calm and move safely.
- Remain with your assigned group.
- Avoid running, pushing, or playing.
- Wait for instructions before returning to class.
Remember: A fire drill is not a race! Our goal is to make sure everyone reaches safety.
π Lockdown Drills: Stay Calm, Stay Alert
Lockdown drills help us practice responding to situations when remaining in a secured location may be necessary.
During a lockdown drill, students are expected to:
- Stop talking and give their full attention to the teacher.
- Follow directions immediately and carefully.
- Remain calm and avoid distracting others.
- Stay in the location directed by the teacher.
- Keep personal devices put away unless instructed otherwise.
- Wait for official instructions before changing locations or resuming activities.
Important: Lockdown drills are serious safety exercises. They are not the time for jokes, conversations, or unnecessary movement.
Your teacher will review our specific classroom lockdown procedures with you in person so that everyone understands what to do.
β±οΈ Why Following Directions the FIRST Time Matters
Think about how much can happen in just a few seconds.
During a regular lesson, taking a moment to finish a sentence or ask a question might not seem like a big deal.
During an emergency, those seconds matter.
When your teacher gives a safety instruction, you should not need several reminders.
That means:
- Listen the first time. Stop what you’re doing and pay attention.
- Respond immediately. Don’t wait for your friends to act first.
- Stay focused. Avoid conversations and distractions.
- Follow directions exactly. Don’t make up your own plan.
- Remain calm. Your behavior can help others stay calm, too.
Sometimes instructions may change depending on the situation. That’s why listening carefully is more important than simply memorizing what happened during the last drill.
π€ We’re Responsible for One Another
Middle school students are becoming more independent, and that independence comes with responsibility.
During safety drills, your choices don’t affect only you. They can affect your classmates, teachers, and other people on campus.
Being responsible means understanding that everyone deserves a safe learning environment.
You can help create that environment by taking every drill seriously, following directions, and looking out for others.
If you ever have a safety concern, notice something unusual, or need additional assistance during a drill, communicate with a trusted staff member as soon as it is safe to do so.
π What Will We Practice in Class?
We will review our school’s specific fire and lockdown procedures together in the classroom.
You’ll have opportunities to ask questions, understand expectations, and practice responding appropriately.
Some safety procedures are not shared on our public website, but you will receive the information you need directly from school staff.
Your job is to listen, learn, and take every practice opportunity seriously.
π― Your Challenge: The First-Time Listener!
Think about the following situations:
Scenario 1: You’re talking with a friend when your teacher announces a safety drill. What’s the first thing you should do?
Scenario 2: Your classmates begin laughing and talking during a drill. How can you demonstrate responsible behavior?
Scenario 3: Your teacher gives an instruction that’s different from what you practiced last time. What should you do?
π Bonus Challenge: The 3-2-1 Safety Reflection
In your notebook, answer these questions:
3 reasons emergency drills are important.
2 ways you can help your classmates stay safe during a drill.
1 reason following instructions the first time is so important.
π Final Thought: Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility!
We practice emergency procedures because preparation helps us respond calmly and responsibly.
You don’t need to be frightened of safety drills. You need to be prepared, attentive, and willing to follow directions.
Remember our three safety expectations:
π Listen the FIRST time.
β±οΈ Act immediately.
π€ Help keep everyone safe.
Let’s work together to make our classroom a safe place for everyone! π
