As the 2023 Tax Season gets started, I’m sure you all have questions about a wide range of topics. My goal is to help tax payers understand taxes and find ways to legally keep as much money in your pocket as possible. Below are tips that will solve some common questions and scenarios that I see during the annual tax season.
If you have any additional tips or questions, feel free to comment and I’ll get back to you!
Three tips to get your 2023 tax season started
- Gather all your tax related forms.
- Access your online tax portal.
- Check your banking information for direct deposit.
Tip 1. Gather all your tax related forms.
Most people know they need their W2s and 1099 forms to file taxes. There are other tax forms that you should keep in mind when filing. Some basics include bringing forms to confirm your identity like driver’s licenses, social security cards, or birth certificates. Another important form clients often forget is the 1095-B form which is used to report government-sponsored healthcare coverage. To help you all out, I’m working in my Tax Season Guide which will be an additional page on this blog. Once it’s complete, you can refer to to anytime.
Tip 2: Access your online tax portal.
As the number of online tax prep services increases, so does the need for clients to make sure they have access to their past year’s 1040 and current year’s tax information. Clients should go into their online tax portals and change their passwords annually- especially if they’ve ever accessed it from a public computer. If you don’t remember your password, reach out to your tax preparer. They can help you get started.
Tip 3: Check your banking information for direct deposit.
This one doesn’t happen as much as it used to, but it does come up every so often. Make sure your direct deposit information is correct on your tax return. There have been times when issues such as incorrect data entry, identity theft, or simply forgetting to update account information has resulted in clients waiting weeks before receiving their tax refund. You can just check your 2022 tax return and confirm that your routing and account numbers are accurate.

Take care.
